The Roundhouse Studio Gallery

Savannah, Georgia (2023)

The design of the space incorporates volumes of varying sizes to create a sense of change within the program. The wedge-shaped form pays homage to the historic roundhouse and is made of brick, with glass and steel accents for contrast. The circulation and program were intentionally arranged to facilitate gradual and structured movement between public and private spaces. The large, open-air areas are designated for public and work purposes, while the more enclosed areas provide privacy. This design reflects the close interaction between the workshops and Frogtown while maintaining a distinct separation.

Site Research

The Gallery sits within the Georgia State Railroad Museum. A site rich with history and visitors. At one point, the roundhouse was a complete circle. The form of the Gallery continues a section of the roundhouse. The proposed building footprint would be in an area with high circulation, more excellent, and increasing attendance. The site is solid ground with some uneven terrain.
